Part of the ‘Topless’ series, this piece plays with the literal term ‘topless’ as the subject is, indeed, topless. However, in a deeper way, the subject’s head covering is there, but not there. That sense of identity that they are attached to is disappearing into the background. Without it, what happens to sense of self? Already vulnerable, does the subject now face a greater identity crisis, or are they left with something that’s still real, and very much themselves? The thought behind the pieces in ‘Topless’ is to just get us thinking about how tightly we hold to ‘things’ and that there may be a greater sense of self behind those things that we identify with… such as kindness, or grace or compassion.
